business really?
Ten questions, one clear maturity level and your three biggest levers, in under three minutes. You see the result instantly, with no sign-up.
In short: ten questions produce a score from 0 to 100. The cross-industry average is 62 (Bitkom Digital Office Index 2024).
- Foundations
- 0–39This is where the greatest untapped potential lies.
- Developing
- 40–59A solid base with clear room to grow.
- Advanced
- 60–79You're well positioned, and close to the leaders.
- Frontrunner
- 80–100You're playing in the top tier.
How does the maturity check work?
The check is a structured self-assessment for small and mid-sized businesses. It doesn't ask which software you use, it asks how your workflows actually run: where data is still copied by hand, chased up and corrected. The result is a score from 0 to 100, one of four maturity levels and up to three areas where the next step is most likely to pay off.
Which areas does the check cover?
Each question covers an area where digitalisation in SMEs typically gets stuck:
- Process digitalisation
- How do your core processes run today?
- Data integration
- How well are your systems connected to one another?
- Automation
- How much recurring work is automated?
- Reporting & analytics
- How quickly do you have reliable metrics at hand?
- Scalability
- What happens when your volume grows significantly?
- Error rate
- How often do errors arise from manual data entry?
- Software fit
- How well does your software fit your workflows?
- Interfaces & data exchange
- How do you exchange data with partners and customers?
- Maintenance & dependency
- How dependent are you on individual people or tools?
- Strategy & roadmap
- How deliberately do you steer your digitalisation?
How is the maturity score calculated?
Every question has four answers, from “largely manual” to “fully digital”. Each answer carries a fixed number of points: the weakest is worth 10 to 18 depending on the question, the strongest always 100. Your maturity score is the rounded average of all ten answers, every question carries equal weight.
Your levers are the dimensions with the lowest scores where you haven't already picked the strongest answer, three at most. If you're at the top everywhere, you get a confirmation of where you stand instead of levers.
What do the four levels mean?
The overall score places your business on one of four levels:
- Foundations · 0–39
- A lot still runs by hand, that's no flaw, it's an opportunity. Just a few targeted steps free up noticeable time and budget.
- Developing · 40–59
- The direction is right, but efficiency and data are still lost between systems. The next steps pay off quickly.
- Advanced · 60–79
- Your processes are largely digital. In specific areas you're still leaving potential on the table that can be unlocked consistently.
- Frontrunner · 80–100
- A fully digital operation. Now it's about fine-tuning and securing your lead with tailor-made solutions.
How digital is the average company?
For orientation the check uses the Bitkom Digital Office Index 2024: an average of 62 out of 100 across industries, based on 1,103 companies with 20 or more employees. The check sets the threshold for the leading field at 67 points.
The line “You're ahead of around … %” is an approximation along a curve around that average, not an analysis of real answers from other businesses. The index measures related but not identical questions. The comparison shows a direction, not an exact ranking.
How accurate is the result?
Ten questions are a self-assessment, not an audit. The check replaces neither a process review nor a look at your systems. It helps a team agree on a shared picture of where things stand and decide where to look more closely.
